What's a 'quidditch' and how do I get one?

Quidditch is a mixed gender contact sport played by over 300 teams in over 20 countries around the world. It's based off the wizarding sport in the Harry Potter series created by JK Rowling, although has developed quite some way since those roots. To find out more, head over to the website of the International Quidditch Association, the sport's international governing body.

What's EQC2017 then?

'EQC' stands for 'European Quidditch Cup'. The 2017 stands for... 2017.

The European Quidditch Cup is the highlight of the quidditch calendar in Europe - each National Governing Body will send their best teams to the event, and they will fight it out to become European champions!

Frequently Asked Questions

We've included some FAQ's below. If there's anything that hasn't been covered, let us know and we'll get right back to you! This page will be regularly updated as new questions arise.

Where is it being held, and when?

EQC2017 will be held in the city of Mechelen, Belgium at the site of 'De Nekker'. You can find more details on how to get to EQC2017 here.

The event takes place over two days, the 25th and 26th of March, 2017.

How many teams are attending?

32 teams will be in attendance. You can find a list of qualified teams here, and it will be updated as teams confirm or withdraw their attendance.

Will there be a livestream?

We're currently working with the venue to find out the exact feasibility of a livestream. We'll keep you updated with our progress!

What does it cost?

Currently we cannot give this information yet.

Where can I stay?

We are working to give free accommodation to as many volunteers as possible, with spots prioritised for non-playing volunteers managing the tournament. This means that teams will have to find accommodation for their players. You can find more information about accommodation here and here.

Where's my money going?

We understand teams will be under financial pressure to afford the costs of attending a major international tournament. That being said, we need to pay for of the infrastructure associated with the running of the tournament as well as any equipment used. We assure you that the money teams and players pay to enter the tournament is used for the smooth running of the tournament and to make it an unforgettable experience for everyone.

What's the difference between this and European Games?

EQC is the tournament to find the best club team in Europe - these teams train regularly all throughout the year, and many are affiliated with universities or colleges. European Games is a competition between national teams - teams are selected specially for that event, and will compete for their country rather than a community or school club team.

Why is Catalonia listed? They're not a country! Spain is a country! I'm angry!

Let us explain. The 'National Governing Bodies' title is misleading, as it doesn't actually refer to 'countries', but to 'regions'. When allocating places for EQC2017, each established NGB was involved - this included Catalonia, which is responsible for the development of that particular region. Spaces were allocated to Catalonia, which is an IQA-associated and recognised NGB, for teams within that region, and Spain, as their own National Governing body, was allocated a separate set of spaces to fill.
